Inspired by the enduring ease of Mediterranean life, the 200-square-metre villa brings together natural materials, local craftsmanship and a close relationship with the surrounding paddy fields, creating an environment centred on simple pleasures, shared experiences and a deeper connection with nature.

The ground floor forms the social heart of the villa, with the kitchen, dining area and living room arranged as a continuous open-plan setting that extends towards an outdoor deck. Large openings draw the surrounding landscape into everyday life, allowing views across the paddy fields to accompany moments of gathering, dining and quiet pause. Above, the bedrooms offer a more private retreat, free from televisions and digital entertainment to encourage rest and disconnection. Vaulted ceilings and expansive windows bring daylight deep into the rooms, while carefully dimmed lighting creates a softer atmosphere as evening arrives.

A high degree of customisation was central to realising the villa’s character. Much of the furniture and fixtures were made specifically for the home, allowing each piece to respond to its surroundings while meeting the practical requirements of daily use. This approach extends to the selection of materials, where beauty, longevity and environmental responsibility are considered together. Reclaimed wood reduces the demand for new resources, while biodegradable natural materials help limit the villa’s environmental impact. Their original colours are largely retained, forming an earthy palette enriched by variations in texture and touch.

Local materials and craftsmanship further root Soil & Sand in its setting. Javanese teak brings warmth to the interiors, while naturally dyed tenun fabrics introduce the subtle character of regional textile traditions. Lava stone tiles, sourced from the nearby volcanic mountain, connect the villa to the geological landscape beyond. Together, these materials create an interior that feels grounded in its place, with the hands of local artisans and the qualities of natural resources remaining visible throughout.
