WHO:AN by you knock knock

Daylight filters through sheer curtains at WHO:AN, picking out the grain of timber and the weave of suspended fabric. Designed by you knock knock, the compact hair salon brings together pale walls, muted grey flooring and dark upholstered chairs. Between the styling stations, translucent textile panels give each client a degree of privacy while preserving a sense of the room beyond.

The design addresses the particular intimacy of a salon appointment within a shared space. Enclosing individual stations with solid walls would have fragmented the small interior and limited its visual depth. Lightweight fabric screens allow the room to remain connected, establishing boundaries through texture and transparency.

These partitions are made from sambe, a traditional Korean hemp fabric. Its open weave admits daylight, while the natural variation of its fibres introduces a tactile softness to the restrained setting. Seen against the windows, the cloth becomes almost luminous, its seams and bound edges tracing fine lines across the surface. It provides a gentle visual buffer between clients without the weight of a permanent enclosure.

A timber-clad cylindrical column anchors the styling area. Tall, dark-framed mirrors and suspended sambe panels are arranged around it, bringing a clear structure to the otherwise open room. The solidity of the column contrasts with the lightness of the fabric, while polished metal chair bases add a sharper note to the warm, subdued palette.

Along the perimeter, timber counters and open shelving carry this material warmth into the supporting spaces. The shelving’s intersecting uprights and horizontal planes leave its construction visible, giving an everyday furnishing a quietly architectural presence. Decoration is kept spare, allowing the grain of the wood and the woven surfaces to hold attention. Against these warmer elements, the pale walls and grey floor provide a measured backdrop.

The use of sambe gives the project a connection to Korean material traditions through an element integral to its daily function. Here, the textile is both a practical screen and the defining feature of the interior. Openness and intimacy coexist through carefully moderated views, giving the compact salon room to breathe while making space for the individual.
