The venue was conceived to be experienced from the street before a visitor ever steps inside, with the interior arranged along the length of the shop as a series of scenes framed by the street-facing windows. Seen from outside, the space reads as a sequence of moments.

At the heart of the cafe sits a chunky central espresso bar, composed to appear as a floating island on a raised plinth. One end of the bar is anchored by the pastry display, set beneath a mirrored circular ceiling light that draws the eye. Above the main bench, a diffused grid hovers to create a sense of warmth without exposing a single fixture, while LEDs concealed in ceiling pockets wash the space in indirect light. The reveals are painted in a contrasting tone to the ceiling, and the shapes they form overhead echo the layout below, reinforcing the floating quality of the bar island.

Warmth carries through the material palette. Walls are coated in a soft, peachy sand, offset by a darker tone in the lighting reveals and the ceiling grid above the bar. These hues sit comfortably alongside warm Tasmanian oak timber panels and the terracotta shade of the floor tiles. Light blue joinery offers a counterpoint, appearing in small plinths beside the banquettes and in the leaners that stretch across the front and rear windows.

Spyglass is defined by contrast. Warm timber meets cool stainless steel. A chunky benchtop rests on a light, ethereal reeded glass bar. Elements that are shiny and new are softened by a dreamy quality of light, giving the small venue a presence that reaches well beyond its windows.
