The renovated Gelato Messina store in Newtown, designed by Sans-Arc Studio, blends retro and modern elements with sustainable materials to create a compact, cohesive retail space that reflects the brand's identity.

Stepping into the heart of Newtown, you'll find the reimagined Gelato Messina. This renovated institution, moving just a few strides up from its original King St location, has been infused with a touch of the past - a dash of retro, a sprinkling of the 70s, all embellished with a glossy finish.

The clients, having been inspired by a mid-century house previously designed by Sans-Arc Studio, approached the team to recreate a similar flair within their store. However, this time, they sought something funkier, with a twist. The challenge was to pay homage to the existing concrete ceiling while also injecting a novel, mid-century vibe into the space.

Nestled in a narrow site, replacing one of the first Gelato Messina stores, the location boasts just enough space to house a petite rear counter and allow movement on either side of the gelato freezer. The design inspiration draws from classic gelato bars and traditional diners, incorporating timber panelling and a checkered floor, but with a modern twist and a robust, timeless finish. Eager to highlight the recyclability and availability of aluminium, the design team integrated aluminium details into the warm timber cladding, establishing a striking contrast with the more practical stainless elements. The store features responsibly sourced timber veneer and high-quality tiling throughout, while reusable and recyclable materials like aluminium and stainless steel provide a cohesive aesthetic.

The clients, as owner-builders, contributed to the project as well, crafting the wavy counter and all the joinery in their workshop around the corner at Gelato Messina HQ in Marrickville. They also project-managed the build with their trades.

The end result is a testament to thoughtfully considered and conscious retail fit-out design. The newly transformed Gelato Messina in Newtown brings an updated identity to the brand, reflecting both its well-established visual identity, honed over 22 years of designing and delivering their own stores, and the freshness of the present era, 2023/4.

The design gracefully ties the materials and form back to the original 70s style of the brand, while infusing the space with modern details and fresh ideas. The goal was to create something timeless and enduring. The use of mirror, stainless, and aluminium is a unique feature, softening the gelato churning area into the fit-out and making the space feel cohesive, rather than creating a distinct visual dichotomy between functional and aesthetic elements.
