Casa Tropical by Jaque Studio stands as a humble spectator of the natural landscape, with materials and finishes that blend in seamlessly with the environment. Here, spaces offer a chance to unwind, disconnect, and bask in the serenity of the natural world.

Designed on a single level with an “L” layout and a north orientation, the house was built to embrace the existing natural spring or “cenote” and take full advantage of the views of the surrounding jungle.

The single level "L" layout of the house was built to embrace the natural spring and surrounding jungle, with every space designed to allow ample natural light and cross ventilation. The indoor-outdoor private patios of each of the four bedrooms seamlessly blend the tropical environment into the house's architecture, creating a harmonious blend of nature and design.

As you traverse the main hallway, you're welcomed by a large terrace reminiscent of Mexican haciendas and country houses, a space typically reserved for living areas. With high ceilings and wide views towards the exterior, the house provides cooler interior spaces and a tranquil escape from the outside world.

Completely self-sufficient and off the grid, the property produces its own energy with a battery and solar panel system, while treating its black water with a network of wetlands and taking advantage of on-site water through filtration and softening equipment. An impressive 77% of the surface area of the property has been preserved with pre-existing trees and vegetation, a nod to the importance of preserving the natural surroundings.

Casa Tropical extends across the landscape, capturing the beauty that the site offers. A building placed on the terrain as a spectator of the natural context, with materials and finishes that blend seamlessly with the environment, where every space offers an opportunity to disconnect, relax, and bask in the serenity of the natural world.

Local construction solutions and finishes such as limestone and chukum were used, but the main element is wood. As we look to the future, timber is set to become the dominant building material of the 21st century. It is a renewable resource, lightweight, and has a lower carbon footprint, with physical properties that make it ideal for withstanding the climate conditions of the region. The use of wood also contributes to creating a warm and comfortable environment, with proven benefits for the health of those who inhabit these types of spaces.

Fishtank is not your typical cafe location. Office AIO exploits the cloistered and tame site, conceiving an undisturbed world. A world much like a fish tank, contained by a “non-existent” facade but relishing its own sphere of habitat.
