Located in London, England, Wave Residence is a 2-storey Edwardian Maisonette home designed as a peaceful haven for a young couple with an appreciation for nature. Designed by fourteen a.m. the interior combines natural materials with an emphasis on sustainable design practices. The refined interior features bold geometric forms, balanced by organic and earthy elements. A soft, neutral palette inspired by the simplicity of nature was incorporated with a combination of light and dark woods. Through the entrance are rustic clay plaster walls and natural jute carpet that cover the sleeping quarters.

Uniting the two levels is the custom, refurbished wooden staircase that smoothly transitions into the basement with a master bedroom and washroom. On the opposite side, the guest bedroom and a compact washroom connects to an office and relaxing tea room, with serene views of the lush garden. The designers focused on enhancing the natural light throughout the ground level by installing large, wooden framed windows at the entrance and rear.

“Sunlight and natural materials are crucial for me, as my design ethos is to create restorative spaces by reconnecting us to our environment. Both sunlight and views to the outside are direct links to nature, while organic materials serve as reminders to Mother Earth.” says Winnie Tam, founder of fourteen a.m.

Curated throughout the interior are exquisite art pieces that reflect organic elements found in nature.

“All the walls are plastered with Clayworks, which is a clay plaster, I have chosen a corse texture to create a rustic feeling. Plastering the walls is an artistic process, the subtle patterns created on the wall are soft and natural.”

To maximise the space, the designers relocated the bathroom to the center of the interior, as a result widening the hallway and adding an ensuite for the master bedroom. A sense of warmth and harmony can be experienced through the application of bespoke Iroko timber joinery that subtly frames the doorways, staircase and flooring. Iroko timber has a variation in colour, ranging from red hues to gold yellows, and this is particularly showcased in the stair joinery, where a natural variation of tones of the material can be seen, reminding us of the beautiful variety that nature brings us. Handmade terracotta tiles are used for the bathroom flooring, with underfloor heating running beneath, giving a warm feeling to the bathrooms, it is great stepping into the warm, earthly bathroom for the morning shower.

Curated throughout the interior are exquisite art pieces that reflect organic elements found in nature. The art pieces include a watery blue painting, a molded floral sculpture and a bespoke circular travertine stone, back lit, reminiscent of a solar eclipse to reflect the owners love of the moon. Utilising the difference of the wall thickness of the basement and GF, a slim shelf was created to display art and collections from nature, also one of the owner’s hobbies is to collect beautiful plants during their nature walks.

“A moment of appreciation.

fourteen a.m. is a design studio specialised in creating restorative spaces for City Dwellers.

In this 24/7 non-stop world, we see the need to find time for appreciating smaller things in life. That moment of calm, peace and beauty may seem beyond reach, just like the time 14 a.m. Yet at fourteen a.m., we make it possible.

Guiding our clients on a stress-free architectural journey to create personal sanctuaries is our way of contributing happiness and mental wellbeing to the world. With our unique stress-free process, we design restorative spaces, whether a private house extension in the city, garden annex, country retreat or holiday home.

Our inspiration comes from nature, and we seek wisdom from Eastern philosophies in how to create sanctuaries that are restorative for the soul. Ultimately, we design to help people forge a healthy lifestyle. A lifestyle of simplicity; a lifestyle inspired by nature that extends gratitude towards the world in which we live.”

Wave Residence is a retreat from the bustling city life that pays homage to the beauty of nature. With organic forms and materials, sophisticated warm tones and clean lines, this interior evokes a feeling of soothing calm, ideal for a growing family.
