Gable house by Nest Built
Gable House is a renovation grounded in restraint, warmth and respect for what was already there. Led by Nest Built, the project began with a clear intention to preserve the home’s distinctive existing form while reworking its interior life for a contemporary family brief.
Its clean gable profile, sense of proportion and relationship with natural light became the foundation for a design response that feels both renewed and familiar.
From the outset, the original architectural character was treated as something to be protected. The house already carried a strong identity through its form, and the design team saw value in strengthening those qualities without overwhelming them. The renovation became an exercise in refinement, drawing attention to the home’s existing strengths while expanding its capacity for daily life.
Behind the retained architectural presence, the interior was reimagined to support a more connected and functional way of living. The clients needed spaces that could better accommodate family life, with greater ease between rooms and a more considered sense of flow. Areas were replanned to feel more open where needed, while still maintaining moments of intimacy and retreat. The interior now balances practicality with atmosphere, creating a home that supports everyday use without losing its quiet sense of craft.
The home’s position on a hammerhead block gave the project a naturally private setting, which became an important part of the design response. Nest Built used this condition as a strength, introducing substantial landscaping to soften boundaries and create a more secluded environment. Gardens, courtyards and planted outlooks were carefully integrated throughout the property, helping the home feel protected from its surroundings while staying closely connected to nature.
Openings and windows were positioned with care, framing views toward landscaped areas and drawing natural light into the home. These visual connections give the interior a calm, retreat-like quality, where each space feels anchored by greenery, texture and filtered light. The landscape does more than surround the house. It becomes part of the experience of moving through it.
The transformation of Gable House is strongly expressed through its natural and tactile material palette. Externally, Abodo timber cladding was selected for its warmth, texture and ability to weather gracefully over time. The façade is designed to silver gently, allowing the building to settle into its landscape with a softer, more natural presence. This exterior refresh gives the home a contemporary sensibility while still respecting the strength of its original architecture.
This same material restraint carries through to the interior, where stone, timber and joinery are used to create warmth, depth and continuity. Stone flooring, solid timber ceilings and timber joinery bring a quiet richness throughout the home. These materials were chosen for their honesty and their ability to develop character with age. Nothing feels overly polished or decorative. The approach is restrained, textural and enduring, allowing the architecture to feel softened through touch, tone and material depth.
Across the interiors, comfort is created through the careful layering of natural finishes and considered detailing. Timber-lined surfaces bring warmth overhead and within joinery elements, while stone adds permanence and quiet weight underfoot. Together, these materials create continuity between spaces, helping the home feel cohesive without relying on excess detail. The palette is calm, but not minimal in a cold sense. It is layered, tactile and deeply connected to the way the home will age.
Throughout the project, Nest Built’s architectural and interior responses were closely aligned. The renovation does not separate structure, material and atmosphere. Each decision supports the next, from the preservation of the gable form to the placement of openings, the selection of finishes and the integration of landscape. The home feels carefully composed, yet relaxed enough to support the realities of family life.
Gable House is defined by this balance between old and new, openness and shelter, refinement and warmth. It retains the character that first gave the home its identity, while reworking its spaces for a more generous and practical way of living. Through natural materials, considered planning and a landscape-led approach, Nest Built has created a home that feels calm, inviting and quietly enduring.
