Tisvilde Summer House by Garde Hvalsøe

Danish Summer House by Henning Larsen Features Handcrafted Interiors by Garde Hvalsøe

Architecture studio Henning Larsen has collaborated with Danish furniture maker Garde Hvalsøe to create a coastal retreat along Zealand's northern coastline, featuring cedar-clad exteriors and bespoke wooden furnishings.

Nestled in the rugged landscape of Tisvilde, the summer house responses to its owners’ desire for a seaside escape that harmoniously integrates with its natural setting. The project showcases Henning Larsen's commitment to sustainable design while incorporating Garde Hvalsøe's renowned craftsmanship throughout the interior spaces.

"The design brief called for a retreat that would serve as an escape from city life, where the family could enjoy direct access to the sea while respecting the surrounding landscape," explains Garde Hvalsøe.

The building's exterior is clad in cedar wood that will weather naturally, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding heath, forests, and valleys. A living sedum roof crowns the structure, featuring mosses and succulents that enhance local biodiversity while providing natural climate control.

Inside, natural elements dominate the material palette. Italian stone flooring creates a neutral foundation, while cream-colored curtains add softness to the spaces. Garde Hvalsøe's handcrafted wooden elements feature prominently throughout, including custom-made beds, wardrobes, and hallway cabinetry.

The kitchen forms the heart of the home, centered around a signature Garde Hvalsøe island that exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship. Large windows frame sweeping sea views, while Henning Larsen's skillful use of natural light creates an ever-changing play of shadows throughout the day.

The surrounding garden enhances the project's ecological approach, featuring native meadow flowers and grasses that mirror the diversity of the sedum roof. This thoughtful landscaping creates a natural transition between the building and its environment.

This collaboration between Henning Larsen and Garde Hvalsøe demonstrates their shared commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. Since 1990, Garde Hvalsøe has specialized in bespoke interior solutions that embody traditional Danish craftsmanship, combining uncompromising quality with functional design to create enduring pieces for generations to come.
