The Curated Home by Oryza Design Studio

A composed interior shaped by collection and contrast, The Curated Home by Oryza Design Studio reframes everyday living through material restraint and personal artefacts.

Located within The Legacy OUG in Kuala Lumpur, this four-bedroom apartment was conceived for a collector whose appreciation for art, vinyl records, teacups and ephemera informed every architectural move. Rather than treating these objects as afterthoughts, the home was planned around their presence, allowing ownership and authorship to merge into a singular domestic narrative.

The apartment’s square footprint and elongated corridor presented an opportunity to reconsider circulation. Instead of functioning purely as a passage, the hallway becomes a transitional threshold between communal and private zones. Lined in mosaic-patterned silver quartz stone and punctuated by a custom handle, this corridor establishes an immediate tactile encounter on entry, setting a deliberate tone for what follows.

At the front of the apartment, a former guest room was reconfigured into a home office. Solid timber louvre sliding doors offer flexibility, opening the room to the living area or enclosing it for focused work. Opposite, the primary suite expands into an adjacent bedroom, now repurposed as a walk-in wardrobe. Within the bedroom, restraint prevails: light beige timber flooring, wood-grain laminate cabinetry and softened neutral tones create a quiet backdrop for rest.

The overarching concept, titled The Contrast, explores the intersection of Eastern and Western sensibilities without resorting to overt references. Instead, balance is achieved through furniture selection, tonal variation and layered materiality. Cultural influences coexist through subtle gestures, allowing differing traditions to sit comfortably within the same home.

In the living area, a metal-effect TV backdrop finished in muted rustic copper introduces depth through precision and control. A custom veneer bench adds texture, while the island and dry kitchen anchor the communal zone with jade green marble and Italian quartz integrated directly into the carpentry. Stained walnut cabinetry runs throughout the apartment, acting as a connective thread that tempers bolder material moments.

Earth-toned walls finished with limewash soften these harder surfaces, lending warmth and tactility. The silver quartz mosaic reappears at the entrance, reinforcing the idea of threshold and continuity across zones. Furnishings from King Living sit alongside bespoke pieces crafted by Oryza’s contractor, completing each room with quiet cohesion.

Special attention was given to the home office, where framed calligraphy required a considered backdrop. A window sun screen returns here, mediating light while enriching the wall surface. This area also introduces the master bedroom door, detailed with layered metal finishes and marble inlay — a refined evolution of an earlier Oryza motif.

Not every detail resolved perfectly, with a concealed air-conditioning grille presenting airflow challenges. Yet the broader architectural intentions remain intact. The corridor delivers on its promise as a spatial divider, while the living area and adjacent office demonstrate how contrasting influences can coexist without dominance.

What ultimately defines the home is its dialogue with the owner’s collection. Vinyl records, teacups, art prints and even a framed dollar are integrated into an environment that anticipates their presence. Each object finds its place within a carefully composed interior, shaped by an inhabitant who values how things look, where they sit, and how they contribute to the atmosphere of home.
