RAA Café by Walter Brooke

At RAA’s Adelaide headquarters, Walter Brooke brings a café into the company’s public-facing ground floor, placing hospitality at the meeting point between a familiar South Australian institution and the city.

For an organisation often encountered on the roadside, a café offers a different kind of introduction. Within RAA’s Grenfell Street headquarters, it anchors a ground floor shared with retail, travel and member services, making space for everyday encounters alongside the practical business of membership.

Walter Brooke approaches this public setting through a balance of recognition and warmth. RAA’s signature yellow finds its boldest expression here, tempered by timber that connects the interior to the organisation’s retail environments across South Australia. The pairing gives a familiar corporate colour a more tactile setting, allowing identity to register through the materials as much as the signage.

The café is integral to this shift in atmosphere. Set among functions that might otherwise be approached as separate destinations, it gives the ground floor a shared point of reference. A visit need not be defined solely by a transaction. Coffee brings a less formal register to the address, supporting the ambition for a more approachable relationship between RAA and the public.

Bringing these services together also changes how the headquarters meets Grenfell Street. Hospitality becomes part of its civic presence, connecting the working life of the organisation with the daily activity of the city.

The design’s restraint lies in retaining what people know while changing the circumstances in which they encounter it. Yellow remains unmistakable, but here it belongs to a setting shaped around welcome, familiarity and the simple invitation to pause.
