Nordic Knots unveils flatweave rug collection with Studio MRS
Stockholm-based rug brand Nordic Knots has unveiled its first-ever flatweave collection in collaboration with interior designer Michelle R. Smith of Studio MRS, featuring four distinctive rugs that merge Scandinavian craftsmanship with contemporary pattern work.
The collection comprises three flatweave rugs and one all-natural jute design: Orleans, Jute Stripes, Pierce, and Pointe. Each piece showcases Smith's signature approach to pattern and color, drawing inspiration from vintage pocket squares and classic menswear.
"I wanted the rugs to have colour and pattern but also feel effortless - like a perfectly chosen pocket square that goes with everything," explains Smith. "The texture and colour makes them timeless yet adaptable, working in various settings from summer beach houses to city townhouses."
A vintage Esprit pocket scarf from the 1980s, featuring a trompe l'oeil pattern, served as a key reference point for the collection's aesthetic. The resulting designs incorporate a sophisticated palette of sludgy greens, warm terracottas, and sun-kissed soft pinks, complementing delicate geometric patterns.
The collaboration stems from a decade-long friendship between Smith and Nordic Knots co-founder Liza Berglund Laserow, who first met in New York when sharing a workspace early in their design careers. "From the start, I was in awe of Michelle's interior design, her taste, and her effortless ability to mix styles in the most genuine way," recalls Laserow.
Founded in 2016 by Swedish couple Liza Laserow and Fabian Berglund, Nordic Knots has established itself through its commitment to Scandinavian design principles, creating rugs that feature understated geometric patterns and carefully considered color combinations. The brand's aesthetic draws from Swedish landscapes and architecture, from the hazy blues and greys of Nordic light to the vibrant facades of Stockholm's 19th-century buildings.
"I've always been impressed by Nordic Knots' quality and craftsmanship," notes Smith. "Their flatweaves are some of the best I've used in my projects, and the wear is remarkable. I knew we could create something special together - not just because of our friendship, but because I trust the brand."
The collaboration exemplifies Nordic Knots' approach to partnerships, working with creative partners who bring both exceptional talent and genuine connection to the brand's ethos. Recently, the company expanded its offering to include curtains, maintaining its focus on high-quality materials and Scandinavian aesthetics at accessible price points.
Smith's personal memories influenced the collection's intimate feel: "I wanted to create something that felt fresh, yet reminiscent of the patterns and textures from my childhood. I hope these rugs - with their unique, but small patterns - can serve as a background to memories in the same way."
