Within Sinsa-dong’s hustling urban district, LECAFE is a cafe located in Seoul, South Korea. Inspired by the neighbourhood landscape, the interior was realised by KKOL STUDIO, adopting linear forms, raw materials, and refined lighting to achieve an ethereal, minimal design. Within the space, large windows fill the multiple seating areas with ample light including built-in booths, countertop seating, and outdoor seating - for gathering throughout the seasons.

Invitingly sleek and tactile, the cafe features defined lines and intense tonal contrasts, from white plaster walls, warm wood chairs, and a bold 14-meter island. The dynamic dialogue of white space invites patience while the muted black reveals a hidden depth that speaks to the nature of duality - an ambiance of rough yet tender, and cold yet warm.

Above, illuminated ceiling beams, elicits the characteristics of Brutalism architecture, creating a stunning sculptural display of light and shadow throughout the space. Planned with precision, the lighting system was intended to produce indirect light, reflecting off the walls, to reveal a subtle and balanced atmosphere.

“Beams were angled to intersect with the island, an architectural feature used to create a structure for indirect light. Rays of light are subtly reflected on the ceiling to endow the space with a sense of balance.”

“The aspect that is most central to this space is the 14m long island table that, as if penetrating through glass, connects the façade to the terrace area.”

A main feature of the cafe is the black island, acting as a spatial core and delivering a sense of grandeur. The island is seamlessly integrated into the design as an essential element for guests to gather, linger, and engage in conversation while attempting to draw the attention of passersby. Decorative imagery of solar eclipses line the booths, to inspire a desire for transformation and evoking a sense of tranquility.

“The lighting consists of the aforementioned indirect light that is reflected from the ceiling as well as the round table lamps in the seating area. The design enables the user to control the intensity and direction of light, creating a completely different play on light and shadow for the day and night.”

LECAFE embraces profound simplicity while celebrating the unique surrounding neighbourhood it enhabits. Exuding a refreshing sense of calm, guests are encouraged to relax and dine within an ethereal lighting display.
