Land of Peace by Design Chou

Set along the banks of Bulgwangcheon, Land of Peace is conceived as a vertical sanctuary within the density of the city.

Designed by Design Chou as a showcase café for vegan bakery Boot Bread, the project explores how a single structural gesture can anchor an interior and recalibrate the experience of an entire urban frontage.

At the heart of the plan stands a central column that rises from floor to ceiling, establishing a clear axis within the home. More than a structural necessity, this element acts as a spatial anchor that organizes movement and perception. Circulation, seating, and display are arranged in relation to this core, creating a sense of grounded stability that contrasts with the hurried tempo of the surrounding streets.

The interior is divided into distinct zones for the counter, pastry display, and seating. A stepped showcase extends from the column, forming a layered display that draws the eye inward from the entrance while presenting baked goods with clarity. This horizontal stratification introduces depth toward the façade and reinforces functional order within the compact footprint. The column continues visually into the structure of the display, strengthening the connection between architecture and furniture.

The project is defined by a structural logic that extends beyond the interior, carrying the geometry established at its core outward to shape the façade and its presence along the street. From the bustling pavement, the café reads as a calm void within the urban fabric, its measured composition offering a perceptible pause amid the surrounding activity.

Material expression is direct and unembellished. OSB, cork, and birch are left exposed alongside the structural framework, foregrounding texture and construction. The tactile contrast between metal and wood at the entrance marks a clear transition from exterior to interior, heightening the awareness of crossing into a more introspective environment. By revealing materials in their raw state, the interior echoes Boot Bread’s focus on simplicity and integrity in its craft.

Land of Peace demonstrates how a fundamental structural move can define atmosphere, guide movement, and shape the identity of a streetscape. Through the disciplined interplay of column, display, and material, the project establishes a composed retreat carved from the density of contemporary urban life.
