HK Residence by Paredes Design Office
A calm retreat in the heart of the city, HK Residence by Paredes Design Office merges tonal warmth with refined linearity.
Situated on a historic pier in Sydney’s Walsh Bay, the project combines two adjacent apartments into one composed whole, offering a tranquil interpretation of modern urban living.
The interior evokes a sense of quiet sophistication through a nuanced palette and deliberate materiality. Working in close collaboration with CB Interiors, Paredes Design Office oversaw the transformation from concept to completion. Together, they shaped a home that feels equally suited for daily life and occasional retreat—modest in footprint yet layered in detail and intent.
Throughout the home, smooth curves and clean lines create a measured flow that promotes ease and movement. The reconfigured floor plan opens up the previously separated units, improving flow and reinforcing a sense of visual calm. A balance between open space and concealed function ensures the home remains uncluttered while still offering ample storage, subtly responding to the owners’ transition from a much larger residence.
Drawing from the owners’ passion for classic sports cars and yachts, the interiors reflect a considered appreciation for craftsmanship. References to nautical and automotive design are woven into the detailing—seen in the smooth inlays, polished surfaces and understated luxury. Curved walls and refined joinery reinforce this language, gently softening the layout and enriching the home’s tactile experience.
Materiality plays a central role in creating a grounded yet elevated atmosphere. Timber is used generously to anchor the palette, offering warmth and continuity across rooms. Modern reflective finishes introduce contrast, adding lightness and depth without overpowering the scheme. Each material selection serves a purpose—enhancing the interplay between light and shadow, and between comfort and precision.
Tonal restraint brings harmony to the interiors, allowing individual moments of craftsmanship to take precedence. From custom built-ins to the gentle undulation of surfaces, the home is shaped by subtle transitions and a quiet attention to proportion. Designed to reflect its harbourfront setting, the apartment maintains a strong contextual link, while standing apart through its clarity and composure.
HK Residence is a thoughtful reinterpretation of the pied-à-terre—a modestly scaled home that feels expansive in its refinement. Through deliberate spatial planning and material honesty, Paredes Design Office and CB Interiors have created a home that is both personal and timeless, firmly grounded in its place yet open to the pace of contemporary life.
