Code Black: Where Nostalgia and Innovation Converge in South Melbourne, a unique coffee destination that combines the influence of Canvas Town with the surrounding natural beauty.

Architecture & Interior, Travel, Australia

Located on Coventry St, just across from the bustling South Melbourne markets, Code Black has captured the essence of the area's history and natural beauty.

Inspired by the area's volcanic outcrop and lush green vegetation, the team at We Are Humble have created a narrative that pays homage to the past. Canvas Town, the tent city that once stood on this very land during the gold rush, serves as a powerful influence for the design concept.

Upon entering the space, one is greeted by a series of fixed yet floating elements. The espresso bar, the filter bar, and the banquette seating are thoughtfully designed as lush green mounds, adorned with a sultry green terrazzo finish. These elements serve as a visual representation of the area's elevated landscape surrounded by nature.

The surrounding walls, carefully crafted with a combination of American oak and woven metal mesh, add depth and texture to the space. These layered walls mimic the shapes created by the taut fabric of the canvas tents that once filled the area. The result is a harmonious blend of historical references and contemporary design elements.
