Baltimore by Enoki

In North Adelaide, Enoki brings an Italianate sense of scale to a family home shaped by travel, conviviality and considered contrasts.

Among the stately heritage residences of North Adelaide, Baltimore keeps much of its character to itself. The three-level family home, with architecture by Archaea and interior design by Enoki, presents an understated face to the street, offering few clues to the expansive spaces and expressive interiors beyond. Its first gesture of grandeur comes at the entrance, where oversized timber doors and custom brass hardware suggest a more generous world within.

Drawing on the scale of an Italian palazzo and the owners’ European and British lineages, the home balances architectural formality with the ease of contemporary family life. A sweeping central staircase establishes the proportions of the home, connecting a sequence of spaces that move between private retreat and generous gathering. Enoki’s interiors complement this architectural framework with elevated detailing, tempered by moments of colour and playfulness.

The project continues a longstanding relationship between Enoki and the client. The owners’ international experiences, enthusiasm for travel and love of entertaining inform the home’s atmosphere. Across three levels, formal and informal living areas accommodate different modes of occupation, allowing the house to feel intimate in daily use while opening comfortably to guests.

Outdoor spaces are integral to this arrangement. Multiple terraces and a swimming pool on the middle level evoke something of a Mediterranean escape, bringing a holiday sensibility to the family’s everyday surroundings. Above, the kitchen extends onto an outdoor dining terrace, making the transition from preparing a meal to gathering around the table feel natural and unceremonious.

Within, Enoki pairs richly layered materials with unexpected combinations of colour. Customised pieces and carefully resolved details give the rooms their individual character, while bursts of brighter hues introduce a lightness to the more formal architectural references. Restraint is present, though it never slips into austerity.

This balance carries through to the planning. Expansive proportions coexist with quieter, more enclosed moments, giving the family places to withdraw as well as spaces to entertain. The home’s grandeur is felt in its scale and detailing, but its comfort rests in these smaller considerations.

For all its references to places further afield, Baltimore remains grounded in its Adelaide setting. Its discreet street presence respects the surrounding neighbourhood, while the interiors give expression to the lives and experiences of its owners. Archaea’s architecture and Enoki’s interiors come together in a home in which permanence and playfulness sit easily together, with equal attention paid to its spatial character and the everyday rituals it holds.
