Lee Nuri - Existence of Abstraction

23 June - 31 July 2022

3D, 349 Jiangxi Middle Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai

Featuring freestanding ceramic sculptures inspired by traditional Korean forms, all pieces in this exhibition relate to Korean aesthetics assimilating into any kind of space, starting with the Korean moon jar and then branching into other forms from nature, including rocks, stones, grass, leaves, etc. Lee uses simple and unpretentious creations, emphasising the return of nature. While pieces such as Standing Women and Mother and Child have a quality of turning in on themselves, through Lee’s experimental and polishing process, and reflect a spiritual pursuit.

Lee also introduced a new ceramic material to her practice. “The clay I use is Korean clay, which is commonly called gobaekja. Unlike modern white glaze, gobaekja is beige and has coarser particles, as it contains impurities,” says Lee. “I wanted the work to have a more unique, unadorned texture, and convey a more handmade and grounded feeling.” At first glance, this seems spontaneous and improvised, but it is the flow from volume to line and line to volume in abstract sculpture, allowing not only the softness and gentleness of Korean beauty to be felt but also a seemingly infinite number of images that differ in the eyes of each person to be created.

For this show, the audience is invited to embark on a ritual journey through this quiet meditation room and feel the inside through their own interpretations of work. Between the warm white and ashy blue, rough and cracked texture gently touches, in the nuances, like breathing as secret vibration. As they walk through the gallery space and look closely, the organic works are examined individually, each a result of the artist’s thought, reflection, and perception of the world around her. The abstract and formative beauty in the work offers the viewer time to ponder on the present while subtly revealing the values we want to regain in modern society. “ I think the process of expressing complex forms concisely is to put implicit meaning into things,” says Lee. “At first glance, these are simple lines and colours, but looked at in another way, one instinctively imagines a landscape, which I hope has a subtle influence in everyday life. These experiences could potentially accumulate, creating a better life.”
